A live sound engineer can be responsible for a lot of tasks; A roadie, in its simplest forms, someone who carries the bands/artists equipment in and out of venues and all the heavy speakers, mixing desks etc.
It can be the person who fixes the said artists equipment and checks that everything works fine before the artist goes on stage.
In the venue usually there is a dedicated In-House engineer who will set up the stage, bring the microphones, and check the Front of House sound, ie what the audience is listening.
Sometimes there would be a dedicated monitor engineer -usually brought in by the artist- to mix the sound on stage. A good stage sound is paramount for a good and confident performance by the artist!
Then at the end of the night, the engineer would be the one to pack everything up and make sure all is in working order, nothing is missing and get home, late, tired and repeat everything the next day again...

Live Sound :
I have worked many thousand of hours setting up gigs for bands in the most challenging environments and venues.
Places that sound awful, where equipment is broken, when time is valuable. And also in some great venues. With great acoustics. It was a JOY!
