Crowdfunding is a tool that allows anyone -- be it startup founders, musicians, artists, students, children, to attract a pool of people via the internet to invest in their business idea. A funding target is established, and rewards to backers are offered.
This new type of startup business model has the opportunity to disrupt industries and change the way we determine success and let the best ideas flourish, rather than the best access to capital. This is the main reason that it has become popular for musicians to raise funds to record and tour their music.
While traditionally, investing has been a very closed world with information closely guarded and available at a premium, if at all, one of the things I love about crowdfunding that's transformative is its openness and transparency. It operates in the principle that you –the backer of the project- knows where your money is going exactly and what reward you want from it.
It follows that independent bands and artists, would grab the opportunity to finish their project via a channel such as crowdfunding. In an age of ever diminishing budgets, record labels who don’t take any risks, and general music stagnation as a result of x-factor, or Britain got talent, it makes sense for a band or a singer who has built a following to try and get his/ hers project complete via Kickstarter, or IndieGogo Pledge music etc...
I personally got involved with one such campaign; one of the artists i was recording managed to raise the required amount to finish his project. Another one of my clients is the procedure of doing this right now. Another very successful project was from the band Iamthemorning which a great friend and highly talented engineer Marcel Van Limbeek (http://www.limbeek.com/) mixed their album. They got successful with their campaign and raised the required money to pay for mixing with a world class engineer in world class studio and the results are clearly audible!

It clearly shows that if you are a hard working and talented artist and especially if you have a small following, if you play gigs, then there is a possibility to get released and get the funding from a dedicated audience who clearly exists and wants good music!
